Pure Mysore crepe silk sarees, from our own looms in Bengaluru
Sulakshmi Silks has been weaving in Bengaluru since 1944. Every Mysore crepe silk saree we sell is woven, dyed and finished in our own unit on 8th Cross, Cubbonpet: a manufacturing unit with a shop attached.
Mysore crepe is pure mulberry silk from Karnataka's silk farms, given a very tight twist before it is woven. When the woven saree is boiled to wash out the silk's natural gum, the twist wakes up and draws the cloth into its fine, grainy crepe surface. That is what makes it fall close to the body and hold its pleats.
Every saree is Silk Mark certified, one piece of each design, and delivered anywhere in India. See how a saree is made, from raw silk to the counter.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between Mysore silk and Mysore crepe silk?
Both are pure mulberry silk. Mysore crepe is twisted much harder before it is woven, which gives it a fine, grainy surface and a heavier fall that holds a pleat. A plain Mysore silk saree is smooth.
How can I tell a saree is pure silk?
Look for the Silk Mark: a small hologram label stitched to the saree, issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India under the Central Silk Board, each with its own number. It certifies that the cloth is pure natural silk. Every pure silk saree we sell carries one.
What zari is used?
Tested zari: fine wire, silver-plated and then gilded, wrapped around a silk core. It is what almost every Mysore silk saree at these prices carries. It is not pure gold zari, which costs several times more.
What does GSM mean?
The weight of the silk, in grams per square metre. 120 is light and easy to drape, 130 a little heavier, and 140 and 150 have more body and hold a pleat well.
How long is the saree? Is there a blouse piece?
6.3 metres, with an unstitched blouse piece.
How do I look after a silk saree?
Dry clean sparingly. Change the folds every few months, wrap it in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, and air it in the shade twice a year. Spray perfume before you drape the saree, not after.
